Main techniques for sludge dewatering

The main dewatering techniques and equipment used to remove water from sludge include:

Screw press offers several advantages in solid-liquid separation processes. It is known for its high efficiency in dewatering.  Screw presses operate by using a rotating screw within a cylindrical screen or filter. The material to be processed, such as sludge or pulp, is fed into the screw press. As the screw rotates, it moves the material along the length of the press, exerting pressure and forcing the liquid to separate from the solids.

Thermal Drying: This technique involves using heat to evaporate the water from the sludge. The sludge is heated in a dryer or an incinerator, and the water vapor is removed, leaving behind dried sludge.

Each dewatering equipment has its advantages and limitations, and the choice of process depends on factors such as the characteristics of the wastewater, the sludge, the desired level of dewatering, and the available resources and infrastructure.

Mechanical dewatering of sludge on belt filter presses, centrifuges or screw presses is generally accompanied by prior sludge conditioning with the addition of polymer to ensure satisfactory separation of water and matter. The volume of sludge can be reduced considerably, and dryness levels of up to 25% can be achieved with screw presses. The final stage in achieving dryness levels of 80-90% is thermal drying.
